Nutrition and Fitness Lessons: Due May 26

1. Nutrients: View Nutrition and Fitness Lesson 1 on my blog.  For each nutrient, write down why it is important for the body and which foods are good sources of that nutrient.

2.  Keep a daily food log.  Write down everything you eat and drink over the course of a typical day. You will need this in order to complete the next assignment.

3.  Go to the website, http://www.mypyramid.gov/. You will use this website to complete the following:
           a. click on "my pyramid planner" and fill in the information on height, weight and activity.  Write down the guidelines of how many calories you should be eating daily and how many servings from each food group.
           b. Compare the recommendations with your food log.  In your log, identify how many servings of each food group you had.  What food groups do you eat too much of? What food groups do you not eat enough of?
           c.  Research each food group.  Click on "Inside the Pyramid" and click on a food group to "learn more."  For each food group, look up the "nutrients and health benefits." Write down the nutrients found in this food group and 3 health benefits.  Also look up "tips to help you eat healthier" and write down one thing you can do each day to eat healthier. (Hint: choose the health benefits and tips from the menu on the right side of the screen after you have chosen a food group and have clicked "learn more".)

4. View Nutrition and Fitness Lesson 6: Components of Physical Fitness.  List and define the components of fitness, as well as one exercise you can do to improve this component.  Create a fitness plan for ONE week that meets the basic fitness guidelines.  Over the course of the week, you should have 3-5 days of cardiorespiratory exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes each day, as well as 3-5 of muscle strengthening exercises. You should be stretching daily before and after you exercise.  Make a fitness plan that meets these guidelines.
